May 10, 2018
I came back to revive this blog, untouched since 2011, and found the last heading that I posted, "Small World." I don't think it could have been more perfect for this revival, where I will be blogging about an eight-week trip to Asia that my 11-year-old son and I will be taking. We leave on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, 2018 - only 18 days from now. I opted to keep the date and title of this post intact.
The plan includes Shanghai; Thailand (Bangkok, Kao Tao, Phi Phi, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai); Myanmar (Yangon, Bagan, Lake Inle, Mandalay); Cambodia (Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, across the Killing Fields to Phenom Penh); to Vietnam (Ho Chi Min, Hanoi); Indonesia (Bali); Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur); before starting our trek home in Bangkok that will give us a day at the Panda Breeding facility in Chengdu Shi, Sichuan Sheng, China before coming home. It is going to be a feast of planes, trains, ferries, long-tail boats, automobiles, tuk tuks, scooters and bicycles.
That is our loose itinerary for now, though last night, I was looking at (relatively inexpensive) flights from Bangkok to Sri Lanka -- you know, where Duran Duran filmed the "Save a Prayer" video back in the early '80s? -- and started to wonder if it would be worth the money for a long weekend. Time will tell.
More on the 'why?' for this trip as we go along. I'm hoping my son will contribute to the blog as well, but I'm not going to hold my breath. ;-)
